Astral Grey
David Grimm (vox/guitar) started Astral Grey as a musical idea, hoping to diverge from fitting into a silo with other kinds of music or groups of people in early 1997 in St. Peter, Minnesota. Michael Kilgour (guitar) and Stephen Henderson (keyboards) joined up with Grimm shortly thereafter. In the early days Grimm took on the task of writing while Kilgour and Henderson supported Grimm and learned about his vision.
Their first demo was recorded by Grimm and Kilgour at Wherehouse Recording in Eden Prarie, Minnesota. This recording consists of 4 demo tracks currently available as part of The Grimm Sessions (currently for sale at mp3.com).
Yuuichiro Kazama (drums) and Matthew Weier (bass) joined Astral Grey during the following summer. During the next two years, Astral Grey experimented with different styles and sounds.
Practicing in the basement of Kabuki, a Japanese resturant (and Kazama's place of employment) in Eden Prarie, the group's shared vision began to solidify. Also during this period they began playing live at festivals and bars in the Minnesota Valley and the Twin Cities. In February of 1999, at Oar Fin Records in Minneapolis, Astral Grey (Grimm, Kilgour, Weier) re-recorded 2 of the songs off their original demo. These tracks are available as part of The Grimm Sessions.
After a trip back to Japan, Kazama left the group because of time constraints. In the summer of 1999, Christoph (drums), formerly of Red Shadow Chorus, joined Astral Grey, bringing a new level of energy and musical creativity. Shortly after, Maureen Brennan also joined the group as lighting technician and photographer.
In October and November of 1999, Astral Grey (Grimm, Kilgour, Henderson, Christoph and Weier) recorded their first EP, entitled Dreams Make Girls Blue Here at Atomic K Records in Minneapolis. Karl Demmer, the producer/engineer proved invaluble for his assistance in our first commercial recording endeavor. In early 2000 Weier and Astral Grey parted ways so Weier could pursue his career in digital art and computer animation.
From this point, Astral Grey launched into dedicated writing of new material and preparation for live performances. The current line-up (Grimm, Kilgour, Henderson, Christoph) has a studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
