A funfilled preview concert for the upcoming CD 'Fearsome Critters' by Shawn McBurnie and the Slight Exaggerations. This is singable and family-friendly music, but by no means aimed solely at the younger set! Special appearance by performance artist Heather Zehr.
Shawn, a traditional singer and wordsmith, has written an album's worth of songs that draw upon a broad range of traditions from Swedish folk to blues, featuring 'Fearsome Critters' from Northwoods folklore. Word of these colorful creatures traveled across the country by word of mouth among such people as lumberjacks, gandy dancers, miners, trappers, navvies, and timber cruisers; many stories originated right here in the Midwest.
These stories were created to impress greenhorns and folks back home, and to romanticize the hard work and danger of the lumberwoods. As a result, they are only now entering the song tradition. Shawn and fellow musicians 'The Slight Exaggerations' (Sherry Minnick, Matt Miller, Chad McAnally, Dee Brust, Kerri Joy, Henry Lebedinsky, and Todd Menton) bring the critters to life in various musical styles. The audience is invited to learn a bit about the menagerie and chime in on choruses.
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
